Blind Spots: Insight for Self-Awareness

Continued from page 4

If I am like that, is it an advantage or a disadvantage for me?

Is there any part of me that doesn’t want to be like that?

If I could imagine a way for me to change or at least manage this weakness, what would it be?

Often people are afraid of the knowledge of what is going on inside of themselves because nobody wants to really know how screwed up they are.

If you know what’s driving your behavior then you may have to actually accept the fact that you are responsible for your actions.

Oh no he didn’t just use the “R” word.

Oh yes I did. Re-spons-i-ble. A four-syllable word that feels like it weighs four tons.  But if there is one person that can carry the weight, it’s you (and me).

Let’s go back to our original scenario.  Now change places.  No, I’m not saying that you be the idiot now!

Just imagine that you’re driving and someone jumps into your lane, you honk the horn and he swerves back into the other lane.  Of course, that person is still the non-driving idiot, isn’t he?

More Million Dollar Questions: If you’re not a fault in either scenario doesn’t that mean that there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it?

Doesn’t that mean that you have absolutely no control over what happens?

Do you really want to live your life as if you have no control over what happens?

Here’s the bottom line.

I’ve spent an incredible amount of time studying psychological processes, emotions, and motivation.  And you know what?

The fastest way to take control of your life is to take full responsibility. And the fastest way to begin figuring out others is to figure out yourself first.

Adjust your mirrors, minimize your blind spots, and drive safely.

The old truism says, “Be aware or beware”.

By the way, does all of this work on those idiot drivers? You are on your own with that one. I’ve got plenty of idiots to deal with myself!
